WHAT CLINIC SHOULD I ATTEND?
Most riding groups consist of riders with different and varying ability levels. Riders consider themselves somewhere in between the levels described below, these are general guidelines to help you assess your riding ability and not a measure of your talent.  NXT LVL reminds participants that progression is our main objective, no matter where you are we will help you achieve your next level. We have developed drills and exercises that will challenge your skills and will ultimately help you become a better rider.

LEVEL 1

A Level 1 rider is new to mountain riding or riding in off trail mountainous terrain. This rider is not able to sidehill confidently and struggles, or is not able to counter-steer. When navigating the terrain, this rider lacks understanding of proper use of throttle, brakes and body/foot positioning or placement. This rider will often spend the majority of the time riding in the neutral position. He or or she has very hard time navigating in deep snow conditions.

Characteristics of a Level 1:
  • Has limited mountain riding experience
  • Experiences difficulty with throttle use/control
  • Has little confidence with off trail navigation
  • Has difficulty with proper body positioning and weight transfer
  • Not able to or struggles to execute counter-steering effectively
  • Has little or no avalanche experience
Clinic Recommendation: sign up for a Level 1 Clinic. You can also schedule a private clinic for you and your group of riders to customize a clinic for your group needs.

LEVEL 2

Level 2 riders are able to understand most of the concepts involved in riding snowmobiles in mountainous terrain, but are inconsistent. Having an understanding, but not being able to implement techniques related to mountain riding will most certainly lead to problems. A level 2 rider has the basics down and can countersteer and do opposite foot forward turns. Although they have the skill to sidehill, maintaining that movement in an opposite direction remains a challenge. Level 2 riders are usually the easiest to pick out of a crowd, they can rip up the slopes but in a seemingly out of control manner. Due to the inconsistency in their riding, they often apply an unnecessary amount of throttle to get through technical terrain, which often gets them into unintended predicaments. This level of riding can be dangerous to a riding group, but with some proper techniques and exercises related to control of your snowmobile, a level 2 rider will advance quickly and safely.

Characteristics of a Level 2 Rider:
  • Has mountain riding experience
  • Lacks control or consistency in steep, technical mountainous terrain
  • Continues to overpower the machine
  • Has inconsistent throttle control
  • Has basic understanding of body positioning and weight transfer, lacking timing and consistency
  • Has off trail experience, but lacks symmetry and has a weak side that they try to avoid
  • Has basic avalanche understanding and knows his or her equipment
Clinic Recommendation: sign up for a level 2 riding clinic or  schedule a private clinic for you and your group of riders

LEVEL 3

Level 3 riders can navigate most mountainous terrain with confidence. They have a clear understanding of off trail techniques and are able to identify hazardous areas within the backcountry. They have learned the proper methods to safely navigate through trees and other potentially dangerous obstacles. An advanced rider is someone who feels confident when riding steep, tight technical terrain and has learned the “art” of throttle control. This level of mountain riding is where everyone wants to be and with proper exercises and technique-specific drills, reaching this level is very possible. Riding with confidence and a clear understanding of avalanche dangers will inevitably make you an advanced rider.

Characteristics of a Level 3 Rider:
  • Has a clear understanding of snowmobiling in the mountains and the mechanics of a snowmobile
  • Has the ability to navigate steep, technical terrain
  • Able to identify dangerous avalanche terrain and navigate it in a safe manner
  • Can negotiate most terrain in any snow condition
  • Has the confidence and skill level to dominate terrain
  • Has avalanche experience and is able to execute a avalanche rescue plan
Clinic Recommendation: Riders at this level should schedule a Private Clinic for you and your group to insure they are riding with riders of a similar abilities
